Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter game released in 2019 by Activision and made by Infinity Ward. It was released on October 25, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. It is the sixteenth game in the Call of Duty series as a whole and a reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series.
The game takes place in a setting that is real and up-to-date. The campaign is about a CIA officer and the British SAS teaming up with rebels from the fictional Republic of Urzikstan to fight against the Russian Armed Forces, who have invaded the country, and the Urzik terrorist group Al-Qatala while looking for a stolen shipment of chlorine gas. In the game’s Special Ops mode, players work together to complete missions that come after the main story. For the first time in the series, the multiplayer mode lets you play with people on different platforms and progress on different platforms. It has been changed to make the gameplay more tactical and to add new features, such as a “Realism” mode that gets rid of the HUD and a “Ground War” mode that now lets 64 people play at once. After launch, an update added Warzone, a free-to-play battle royale mode that was also sold as a separate game. Multiplayer also lets people play together on the same screen. This mode has bots, custom maps and game modes, and other creative ways to mess with the game.
Soon after Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare came out in 2016, Infinity Ward got to work on this game. They gave the game a whole new engine, which lets them add things like more detailed environments and ray-tracing to improve its performance. They got ideas for the campaign from real-world conflicts, like the Syrian Civil War and terrorist attacks in London. For the multiplayer, they got rid of the usual “season pass” and “loot boxes,” which let them give free content to players in the form of “seasons” after the game came out.
The gameplay, campaign, multiplayer, and graphics of Modern Warfare were all praised. People mostly had problems with how the campaign was handled and how the Russian military was shown, as well as with how the multiplayer was balanced. In 2022, a sequel called Modern Warfare II came out.
Modern Warfare’s single-player campaign is based on realism and has tactically based moral choices. At the end of each level, the player is evaluated and given a score based on these choices. Players have to quickly decide if NPCs are a threat or not, like a civilian woman who looks like she’s reaching for a gun but just grabs her baby instead. This score, called a threat assessment, is based on how many civilians the player hurts or kills. It goes from A to F, depending on how many people the player hurts or kills. Those who do better on the test get rewards. Depending on what the player does in the game, characters will talk differently. There are also tactical decisions, such as the player using a sniper rifle in a large environment to approach objectives in a non-linear order or choosing to shoot out lights instead of using night-vision goggles during breaching and clearing.
Modern Warfare’s multiplayer has been changed from its predecessors so that it can be played in a more tactical way. This includes a focus on exploring the map, breaking through doors, and a “Realism” mode for hardcore players that takes away the HUD. At first, the mini-map was taken away and replaced with a marker that looked like a compass and had visual clues to help you find allies and enemies. After getting feedback from the multiplayer beta test, Infinity Ward put back the mini-map but got rid of the red dots that showed where other players were (except for when the UAV kill streak is used). Killstreaks, which give rewards based on kills, are also back in multiplayer. In recent Call of Duty games, streaks, which give rewards based on score, have been used instead. With an in-game perk called “Pointman,” however, Killstreaks can be turned into Scorestreaks. In the online modes, there are more players on a map than in previous games. “Ground War,” a new mode, has over 100 players, while “Gunfight,” another new mode, pits two teams of two players against each other in small matches that last 40 seconds each. The game has a large system for customising weapons. For most guns, you can choose from up to 60 different attachments (five of which can be equipped at any one time). At the start of multiplayer matches, the introduction has also been changed. In previous games, players would stand still on the map while a timer ran down to zero. Now, players will be moved into the battle zone as part of different animations.
Modern Warfare is the first game in the series since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts that don’t have a Zombies mode. Instead, it has the cooperative “Special Ops” mode that was also in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
The story of Spec Ops is the same for both the campaign and the multiplayer. It has a mode called “Survival,” which is only available on the PlayStation 4 until October 2020.
At launch, Special Ops has four operations, which are missions with multiple goals that take place on a large, open map and require all four players to work together. There is also Classic Special Ops, which has smaller missions like the original Spec Ops mode.
