Rise of the Tomb Raider is an action-adventure video game that came out in 2015. It was made by Crystal Dynamics and published by Microsoft Studios and Square Enix’s European subsidiary. The game is the sequel to 2013’s Tomb Raider and the second part of the Survivor trilogy. It is the eleventh main game in the Tomb Raider series. In the story, Lara Croft goes to Siberia to find the legendary city of Kitezh while fighting the paramilitary group Trinity, which wants to find out what the city’s promise of immortality is. As Lara explores semi-open hubs, she must move through the environment and fight enemies with guns and stealth. In these hubs, she can raid challenge tombs to get new rewards, finish side missions, and scavenge for resources that can be used to make useful things.
Rise of the Tomb Raider was made right after the 2013 reboot was finished. During development, player feedback was taken into account, and the team cut the number of quick-time events and added more puzzles and challenge tombs. To design Kitezh, the team went to several places in Turkey, like Cappadocia, Istanbul, and Ephesus. Rhianna Pratchett came back as the game’s writer, and Bobby Tahouri took over as the game’s composer, replacing Jason Graves. Camilla Luddington went back to work on Lara’s voice and motion capture. The game was made by Eidos-Montréal, Nixxes Software, and the Foundation engine.
Microsoft Studios talked about Rise of the Tomb Raider at E3 2014. It was announced at Gamescom that same year to be a limited-time exclusive for Xbox 360 and Xbox One. This made the gaming press and community upset. The game got mostly good reviews. Critics liked its graphics, gameplay, characters, and large amount of content. However, some reviewers thought the game didn’t take enough risks. By November 2021, about 11.8 million copies of the game had been sold. Several story and content add-ons that can be downloaded and bought online are now available. The game came out in 2016 for Microsoft Windows and the PlayStation 4. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a follow-up, came out in September 2018.
