How to get your med tech license

Find out what’s needed for a medical technology program.

To be a certified medical technician, you need a high school diploma or a GED, so work on getting one of those first. While you do that, start looking into CMTs in your state. Most places require that you become a CNA (certified nursing assistant) before you can apply to be a med tech. CNA training can take as little as six weeks and is available at community colleges and other local training centers. Once you pass your CNA exam, you can start working in that position. Before you can start studying to be a med tech, you will have to work as a CNA for a certain number of hours. Usually, this takes between six months and a year.


Take a course in medical technology, or don’t.

You can go to classes to learn how to become a certified medical technologist. But, depending on how long you’ve been working in the medical field, you might not need to take this extra course. You can skip the training and go straight to the test if you have enough experience. This is especially true if you’ve ever gone to school to become a nurse. or worked for a short time as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). If you don’t, you will have to take a class for 16 to 60 hours. Most of the time, you can’t pass the test just by being a CNA for the required amount of time before trying to become a med tech. If that’s all you’ve done in the medical field, you should take the class.

Get the Grade

Whether or not you take the specific course on how to become a certified med tech, you will still need to pass a state exam on the subject to get a license. If you pass this test, you will be able to work as a CMT in your state. Make sure to update your credentials as often as your local registry says you need to. which usually happens once every two years. To stay on the list of registered CNAs and CMTs, you must work a certain number of hours in this time frame. This depends on the state.

Find work

Once you get your certification, all you have to do is find a job. If you have worked as a CNA for a year or more in the health care field, you may be able to move up to your new job at the same place. If your employer doesn’t need more med techs, don’t be afraid to look elsewhere. You did what you had to do to become a CMT, so you might as well work in that field.

The goal of the Certified Medication Technician (CMT) training program is to prepare people for work as a CMT in an intermediate- or skilled-care nursing facility. The goal of the program is to teach students how to give non-parenteral medicines. This will allow them to help licensed practical nurses or registered professional nurses with medication therapy.

The course includes at least 60 hours of instruction in a classroom setting and at least 8 hours of hands-on practice in a clinical setting under the direct supervision of an instructor. The class covers a basic review of the body’s systems and how medications affect each one, as well as medical terminology, infection control, and the different types of medications.

Before a certificate can be given and a person’s name can be put on the Missouri State Certified Medication Technician (CMT) Registry, the person must pass a final written exam and a minimum two-hour final practicum exam.

  • actively listed on the Missouri CNA registry and working as an approved Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) for at least six (6) months before enrolling in the CMT course.
