Free Guy is an American action comedy movie that will come out in 2021. Shawn Levy will direct and produce the movie, which was written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn and is based on a story by Lieberman. Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery, and Taika Waititi are some of the actors in the movie. It tells the story of a bank teller who finds out he is a non-player character in a massively multiplayer online game. He then teams up with a player to find proof that the CEO of a gaming company stole the player’s game’s source code.
In 2016, Lieberman began writing the script, which 20th Century Studios bought soon after. Levy turned down the script at first, but after Hugh Jackman introduced him to Reynolds, he changed his mind. This caused him to leave the project he had been working on to turn the Uncharted video game into a movie. When Disney bought 21st Century Fox, Free Guy was one of the first films made by 20th Century to keep making movies after Disney took over. Between May and July 2019, the movie was shot in Boston and Los Angeles.
After being pushed back twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was shown for the first time at the Piazza Grande section of the 74th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on August 10, 2021. Three days later, on August 13, it was shown in theatres in the United States in RealD 3D, IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema. It made $331.5 million all over the world. Critics liked the idea behind the movie and said it reminded them of science fiction movies and action games like Ready Player One, The Truman Show, The Matrix, Grand Theft Auto, and Fortnite. At the 94th Academy Awards, this movie was up for Best Visual Effects. A sequel is in development.
Music
Christophe Beck wrote the music for the movie. Beck wrote the music for the Disney animated short film Paperman, which is used in parts of the film’s score. Levy had planned to use “Your Love” by the Outfield, but Reynolds suggested that she use “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey instead. Reynolds asked Carey for permission to use the song, and she said it could be used in the whole movie. Comer also sang a cover of “Fantasy” that was used in the movie.
Marketing
In 2019, when Reynolds and Waititi were promoting the movie, they joked that it was fun to work together for the first time. They did this to make it seem like they didn’t know anything about the Green Lantern movie. Reynolds posted a video on YouTube in July 2021 called Deadpool and Korg React. In it, he and Waititi acted out their roles as Korg from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Wade Wilson/Deadpool from the X-Men movies, reacting to the trailer for Free Guy.
On August 12, 2021, Dude became a costume you could buy in the video game Fortnite. At the same time, a series of optional quests were added so that players could unlock an emote with Ryan Reynolds’s voice. The marketing team for Free Guy made fake posters that looked like Super Mario 64, Minecraft, Among Us, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Mega Man, Street Fighter II, Doom, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
