If you want to help sick or injured animals, you can become a veterinary technician in about two to three years. This is a job that is in high demand.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says that between 2019 and 2029, the U.S. will add 18,300 jobs for veterinary technicians and technologists. This would mean that the number of jobs would grow by 16% over that time, which is about four times faster than the average projected growth for all jobs in the U.S. The number of households with pets should go up in order for growth to happen.

Most states require veterinary technicians to have at least an associate’s degree and a license or some other kind of credential. In Alaska, California, and Wisconsin, veterinary technicians can take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) after getting an alternative degree or training on the job. The VTNE is run and supervised by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB). In some states, like Massachusetts, you might not need a license.

Vet techs’ pay depends on where they work, how long they’ve been on the job, and what they studied in school. The BLS says that in 2020, the median salary for a vet tech was $36,260.

Vet techs can work outside of veterinary offices and make more money if they get a specialization in a field like dentistry, anesthesia and painkillers, zoological medicine, or critical care. Many of them go on to work in biomedical research or as managers, like at an animal shelter.
